A New Day: Template Update

** Please note that a template update is available. Find the latest version here **

Because I received so much positive feedback on the first version of the New Day dokuwiki template (thank you for that!) I created an update, a new version if you will. The template now has:

  • A more flexible top menu, based on the top menu in the Simple template. The topmenu is now based on a wiki page and supports submenu’s.
  • New actions for Facebook, Twitter and StumbleUpon. But the thing is, it’s easier to add you own actions for your favorite social networks by editing tpl_actions.php. Let others enjoy your actions by sharing them on the New Day dokuwiki page.
  • The sidebar can now be set to be separated from the wiki actions. Or not. Find the setting at the bottom of the admin configuration page.
  • If you are working with various translations of your wiki, the tempate now tries to use your translation before it falls back to the default template translation.
  • Translations for German (thanks to Andrew Law) and Russian (thanks to Ianka Kryukov)
  • CSS fix for the side bar headers
  • The right bottom image was fixed. Again.

If you find any bugs, please let me know. You can find the previous version and user comments here.

    Hi,
thanks for your great template. In the media upload I have a problem with the screen it is totally wrong and all what I can see goes into each other. Can you check that at your installation. For me it’ actually the only problem.
    Regards Tom

    • Tom says:

      Hello,
I have found the problem. What I have done is the following:
In the file style.css you have to give in the following code to make the problem gone.
      media.css=screen <- OLD
../default/_mediaoptions.css <- NEW now the Look is as it should be but we have no adjustment for the pictures like left right centered and all these things but better that not readable…

Maybe you have a better solution I have only found out this, and for me it works..

      Regards Tom

PS: You made a very good job with this template, thanks again…

    Louis,

Thank you for providing such wonderful template! I’m new for dokuwiki, but I believe this is one of the best template for it.

By the way, I have a question. I installed indexmenu plugin for my website and made sidebar page to configure it. I expected that the sidebar would be like a Windows directory tree, but it isn’t changed even the sidebar page shows the tree.

Some of other templates can display the tree in the sidebar, so I thought that something configuration should be changed. Is there any page that I should change? I looked around on the internet for a few days, but I couldn’t find the information. (I might overlook it because I’m not good at English.)

    • Louis says:

That’s quite a complement, thanks. I’m working on some new templates, so keep checking in :)
I’m not sure about the indexmenu plugin however; I know that some people have used it successfully with my template, but I’ve never tried it myself. I’ll try it out some time soon, but I can’t make any promises.

      • Naoto says:

Thank you Louis! No promise is fine. I’ll keep looking around on the internet, but IF you can find any information, I appreciate it.

        • Louis says:

Hi, I tried the plugin and it turned out to be very easy. Perhaps your need to play around with the available options. I used indexmenu (not indexmenu2) with the js and navbar options:

          {{indexmenu>. | js navbar}}

          or

          {{indexmenu>.#1 | js navbar}} (closed namespaces)

          • Naoto says:

Thank you Louis! Hmm… my configuration is almost same as you, but it keeps shows “newday sidebar” even I set up sidebar page. I can see the directory tree only in the page.

I reinstall dokuwiki yesterday and resetup, but same result. I need to look around configuration more. Thank you anyway, I appreciate your help!!

          • Naoto says:

I gave up finding resolution. Newday’s original index is always shown in the sidebar. I tested battlehorse, then indexmenu works propery. I really miss newday template but considering to change… :-(

I will try again someday! Thank you for your help!

          • Louis says:

            Naoto,

I’m still pondering what might be going wrong here. I used the last version of the template (201009121), what version did you use?
Also, where did you put the {{indexmenu>. | js navbar}} code? It should go into the sidebar page (i.e. the page called ‘sidebar’).

Let me know it still won’t work. Perhaps you can send me a link?

  3. Chris says:

    Hi,

thanks for the great template. I just tried a little bit and it seems to be great. Well done!
I just have one question: How do I change the picture on top f the Wiki? On the pages, you linked on your homepage, some of them put their own pictures in it, but I have no idea, how it works.

    Thank you for answering!
    Chris

  4. Jonas says:

    Hi Louis

I’m very comfortable with this themplete but I just wana put the pic on the left side of sidebar and I just wana remove “Index This is an index over all available pages ordered by namespaces. ” and replace the pic, I just trying to find the place in main.php or …… but I can’t any way if there is a way please I need this.

    Thank you very much

    • Louis says:

      Read the documentation on http://www.dokuwiki.org/template:a_new_day
You haven’t created a wiki page called ‘sidebar’.

      • Jonas says:

Louis thanks for your replay, but I don’t know I didn’t express my needs clearly I guess. here is the thing on the left side there is a namespace that contain play ground, wiki …. and there is also some text like

        Index
“This is an index over all available pages ordered by namespaces.”

so I I just want to remove this text and replace the picture.

        thanks

        • Louis says:

Yes, I understand you and I’m telling you to read the documentation. What you are seeing is default wiki behavior for when there is no page called ‘sidebar’.

          A more specific link: http://www.dokuwiki.org/template:a_new_day#sidebar_usage_instructions

Quote: “If there is no sidebar page in the namespace hierarchy, the index will be used.”
That is, the index and the message: “This is an index over all available pages ordered by namespaces”.

There is no easy way to change the appearance of this default behavior; the only option you have to change what you are seeing is to create a wiki page called ‘sidebar’ and fill it with what you need. The sidebar page, once created, will be shown in your…sidebar.

  6. Leon says:

    Hi,
I just downloaded this template (I’m a dokuwiki newbie) and it doesn’t work – I just get a blank page. View page source gives:

    … and nothing else.

I can use other templates OK.
I am using the latest template and dokuwiki on Firefox.

    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

    • Louis says:

I just tried it downloading and installing the plugin, and it works as expected. Based on that, I guess it could be a number of things; one is that something is wrong with your permissions, but I still wouldn’t expect a blank page (do all templates have the same permissions?). Two is that the template has an argument with another plugin (turn them all off if you have any). The third is that something went wrong with the installation of the template (reinstall, preferably in a clean environment). Does this help you in any way?

By the way, did you install the template above? Because that isn’t the latest version, you can find that here: http://blog.chirripo.nl/2010/06/a-new-day-update/

  7. Chris says:

Should the top menu bar work in IE7? It works in IE8 and firefox.

    See this screenshot: http://kintnerc.net/newday/screenshot.png

The centering I don’t care about but the dropdown menu should be over the “Landmark Papers”

    Thanks
    Chris

    • Louis says:

Yes it should work. But to be honest, I’ve never tested it myself. I’m a bit overwhelmed with work lately (and I don’t have an environment with IE7 set up) so I’m not able to provide a fix this right away. It’s on my todo list however. Thanks for bringing it to my attention and sorry for the inconvenience.

      • Chris says:

        Don’t worry about it.

I found the fix. In line 83 in layout.css (div.dokuwiki div#tpl_simple_navi ul ul) change position to relative instead of absolute and it works.

  8. bert says:

Great job on the “new day” wiki! I really like what you did with the layout. I install the latest version and I have a question for you. How do I add my home page link to the side bar “index”? Our site is a geeklog site and the wiki is only one part of the site.

Also, where do I go to change the links at the bottom of your wiki, such as the “donate” link to paypal?

    Thanks for the great work!!!

    • Louis says:

      Thanks!

About the sidebar: create a new wiki page called sidebar. The stuff in there should show up in you actual sidebar. Also see this.

About the donate link. You don’t adjust it, that’s my income man! :) Just kidding. Go to the template folder and have a look at footer.html

  9. Hugh says:

It’s a lovely theme :) I’m hoping to adopt this, but might need some help!

    1. There is SO MUCH css! I’m lost! I only want to know where to make the text in the sidebar (links) bigger, but there are about ten css files and thousands of lines of code to look thorough. HELP!! If only themes could have one simple CSS stylesheet….

    2. If you have namespaced links in your sidebar, eg. [[namespace_one:link_one]] , then if you click into the namespace you get a nice menu of the namespace links, but all the root links have disappeared! In my root space I have links to HOME (important!), How To Use (wiki syntax), Playground, and one or two other essential introductory pages. But if I click into another namespace these all disappear…and the only way back is to click the title/logo to return to the home page. OK, that works, but I don’t think it’s a good idea losing your essential root links, particularly HOME link, when you click into another namespace. That’s poor navigation to me.

But otherwise a very fine and good looking theme!

    • Louis says:

      Thanx for the compliments!

If you have trouble finding your way in stylesheets I can highly recommend Firebug for Firefox. It allows you to right click HTML elements and ‘inspect’ them. By inspecting an element you can see and adjust the HTML and CSS associated with the element. Also line numbers and filenames are mentioned so you know where to find the relevant CSS. In this case Firebug would’ve been less useful, but you’d still have known what CSS you were looking for.

      1) In design.css find line 83 (div.smallpadding) and add a font-size attribute.
      2) I’ll have to look into this. You don’t happen to have an accessible link for me where I can see some action?

  10. Kay says:

I’ve read the template page on the dokuwiki page and play a bit with the actionbar feature. I have noticed that according to the main.php the actionbar is show although the flag btl_action_palette is not set. The flag only enables/disables the text above the list of links. Maybe you can change this with the next version.

    • Louis says:

You can use the btl_default_submit_actions_status to disable the action bar. Although I’ve noticed you’ll still see the action bar text if btl_action_palette is enabled as well (which indeed needs to fixed).

  11. MacXi says:

    Louis,

There is no bug. I ask apologize.

I did not edit correctly the topbar, the error was my fault.

    The new version is great.

Now that I corrected my mistake by editing correctly the topbar the menu worked perfectly, much better than the previous version, because there are more options.

I will include the news in my tutorial.

    Congratulations again and thank you

    Louis,

I download the template newday “dokuwiki_template_newday_20100310.zip”, is very good. Every think is good, especially topbar.
I was very happy with newday when I discovery.
The layout is ok and I propose insert “a default status for user actions”, “default status for page actions” and “default status for wiki actions” in the topbar. You can see in this link:

    http://docs.mandriva-br.org/mandriva/dicas_para_iniciantes/dica/configurar_modelo_newday_no_dokuwiki_-_mandriva_2010

Today I download “dokuwiki_template_newday_20100327.zip”, but there is a bug in my topbar with updated newday.

I try to show you in this screenshot: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1220932/mdv/dicas-dokuwiki/newday-bug.jpg

I suggest leaving topbar as before and allow the user to make the switch. My opinion is not because of the bug, but because I liked the topbar as it was. So I will continue using the previous version, it is the best of all that I have examined congratulations

Congratulation for good work in newday and thank you.

    • Louis says:

Thanks. And hi again. The bug you’re showing is strange for two reasons:

      1) I don’t think I included bullet numbering in the HTML lists (which suggests you made some modifications of your own, but you’re the best judge of that).
      2) I haven’t received any other complaints. That doesn’t mean anything off course, and I’ll have a look at the issue. I’m just trying to get some leads to what the problem might be.

Also, notice the sidebar in your screenshot, it’s not showing any images (it should look like the old version) and seems to suffer from the same bug you’re mentioning.

I’ll consider your suggestion for adding two types of top menu by the way, perhaps there’s people out there using this differently than what I’m thinking at the moment.

I think changing the button location for the actions you’re mentioning might be a good idea. It’ll be a setting though, just like positioning the sidebar to the right. I’m still thinking about some other settings regarding those actions so it’ll have to fit therein.

  13. Macxi says:

    Louis Wolf,

Congratulations about your work in template newday for dokuwiki.

I put a option em topbar.

    What do you think?

Looks nice :) I see you,ve put quite some work in that guide! Portuguese is not my strongest language, but your post seems to miss a part. Also, your posts keep ending up in my spam folder. I’m just mentioning this because that’s why it took so long for them to show up here (It’s not the first place I look).

  14. Thadeu Penna says:

    Hi

Just to let you know that the new topbar is perfect and it does not have the bug concerning farming I reported before. Thank you so much.
